Brief History:
Selene's origin is yet unrevealed, but she is known to have lived for several millennia, and to have been a foe of the sorcerer Kulan Gath. In past ages she was renowned as a sorceress whose power was feared and respected by practitioners of black and white magic. She eventually came to live in the ancient Roman Republic. For unknown reasons, she accompanied the large number of Roman citizens who fled Rome in the First Century B.C. and sailed to the New World, where they founded Nova Roma ("New Rome") in a hidden section of the Amazon jungle in what is now Brazil. The founders of Nova Roma fled Rome because they foresaw that its republican government would be replaced by an imperial one. For reasons that remain unknown. Selene found herself unable to leave Nova Roma, and remained there for roughly two thousand years. Nova Roma she led the dreaded Cult of Fire as its Black Priestess.
In recent years Selene married Marcus Domitius Gallio, a senator of Nova Roma who plotted to abolish its republican government. The intervention of the New Mutants both thwarted Senator Gallio's schemes and led to Selene's apparent destruction. However, Selene not only survived, but somehow found herself able to leave Nova Roma. She soon traveled to New York City. Over the two millennia that she was trapped in Nova Roma, a religious cult worshipping Selene as a goddess had continued to survive in the outside world. Selene made contact with a leader of the cult, Friedrich von Roehm, in New York City. Von Roehm was also a member of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, an elite group secretly dedicated to achieving world domination. Von Roehm successfully sponsored Selene for membership in the Inner Circle, and she rapidly rose to the high rank of Black Queen of the Inner Circle.
In the 1920s Selene romanced the then-human artificer Janus Andrioun, hoping to install him as White King in order to increase her own power. The full details of their falling-out are unknown, but it is known that shortly afterwards Janus abandoned his last ties to humanity, becoming Pontifex.
Although Selene enjoyed great power and prestige in the years to come, behind the doors of the Hellfire Club politicial intrigue was afoot. Sebastian Shaw, the Black King of the Hellfire Club, had never wanted Selene to be accepted, and was plotting a way to depose the Queen. In response, Selene took up the young Madelyne Pryor as her apprentice, hoping to use Madelyne's power against Shaw. Instead, Madelyne betrayed Selene, and her and Shaw teamed up to ensnare Selene into a powerful chamber that literally tore apart the Black Queen's molecules and reformed them continously. Shortly afterwards, Madelyne left the Hellfire Club.
Selene eventually escaped, and took revenge upon Sebastian Shaw, feasting upon his life energies. Finding no Madelyne Pryor to take revenge upon as well, Selene settled for completing massacring the Inner Circle and starting over from scratch. The Black Queen traveled across the world gathering mutants that she felt could be of value to her in her most ambitious plan yet: the deaths of Apocalypse and Mister Sinister, the only two men more powerful than she.
Selene's plans were interrupted by the re-emergence of her traitorous apprentice Madelyne Pryor. Selene attacked Pryor with her minions, only to find herself up against a much more powerful force that she had come to known. Caught off guard, Selene fled.

Powers and Abilities: Black Magic: Selene is an accomplished sorceress, specializing in the Dark Arts. Many of her spells and incantations are exceedingly powerful but drain her own life energy, and thus she reserves them for only the most powerful opponents.

Personality: Elegant, decadent, and utterly immoral, Selene is an ambitious, venomous woman who looks at human and mutant lives as nothing more than pawns on her chessboard, manuevering them as she sees fit. Thus, Selene really only hates those who either refuse to participate in her games, or worse yet, have the power to defy her. Selene is used to getting her way, and no matter how many smiles and promises of power she may offer, in the end she is out for only one person: Selene.
Anything Else: Selene's only true vanity is the demon-lizard she keeps as a bit, which had been dubbed "Fluffy" by her staff (although they dare not let her hear them in the act!)
Flight: When Selene slaughtered her External brethren she gained the power to defy gravity.
Immortality / Eternal Youth: As long as Selene continues using her Psychic Vampirism to drain the life from mortals, she is functionally immortal and does not age.
Psychic Vampirism: Selene possesses the ability to suck the life force from humans & mutants weaker than herself. She has to do this to stay young, but can also do it to gain additional power in a pinch.
Super Speed: Although Selene can teleport and thus rarely needs to use this ability, she is enormously quick and her reflexes are superhuman as well.
Super Strength: It has recently been learned that Selene possesses superhuman strength, it is not known if she gained this ability through her slaughter of the Externals.
Telekinesis: Selene can levitate small to mid-level inanimate objects with her mind.
Telepathy: Selene possesses moderate telepathic abilities. She subconsciously projects a shield protecting her from small to mid-level telepathic probes.
Teleportation: Selene can teleport from one place to another with little more than a thought.
