Brief History:
Otto Octavius didn't have a happy childhood. Though even in his earliest years he displayed an intellect far greater than that of his peers, he was ostracized in school and abused by his father Torbert, a construction worker who thought his gifted son a 'sissy.' His mother Mary on the other hand encouraged his studies, wanting him to have a more fulfilling life than his father had. However, she also leaned on her young son for emotional support, which would cause him many problems in later years.
Octavius made it through high school, along the way becoming President of the Science Club (although many of the other students quit in protest), and was given his choice of college scholarships. During his first year of college, his father, in an ironic twist, was killed in a construction accident. While Octavius did not mourn in the least for his father's death, he took pity on his lonely mother, and visited her often. Soon she became overbearing and clung to him. Despite this, he graduated from college at the top of his class, and he proceeded on to graduate school.
It was in graduate school that he met Rosalie Harris, and it was that union which changed everything for Octavius. While his mother loved him, Rosalie understood him, understood him in a way that no one ever had before. However, his mother did not approve of their union, and Octavius was forced to choose between the love of his life and his mother. He chose Rosalie, and while his mother died shortly afterwards, he would say in later years that it was the best decision he ever made.
After graduate school he quickly established his genius in the field of nuclear research. He did not have to work hard to find willing employers, but funding for his projects drove him to join the employ of OsCorp. Dr. Seward Trainer, a geneticist who admired Doctor Octavius's research, introduced his daughter Carolyn Trainer to him. She was immediately enthralled and began to stalk him, but he rebuffed her, having already found the love of his life in Rosalie, now Rosie Octavius.
Otto spent the next seven years building his dream - a renewable fusion-based energy source that would eliminate the need for gas or electricity. To aid him along the way, he created a set of 'smart arms.' Built to allow Octavius to control the fusion reaction, the arms were controlled by his brain through a neural link. Although they were guided by an advanced artificial intelligence, Octavius created an inhibitor chip which allowed him to stay in control of the arms.
Finally the day came for Octavius's dream to be realized. With his wife Rosie by his side, he unveiled his fusion reactor. And while his experiment was going perfectly fine at first, a miscalculation he had overlooked led to a horrible accident. His creation collapsed into a gravity well, and before they day was over his lab nearly imploded upon itself.
In one day, Octavius lost everything: his laboratory, his life, and, worst of all, his wife, who was killed in the accident. In her place, Otto had his 'smart arms,' which had been fused to his very body in the accident. The inhibitor chip had been destroyed as well, and the arms now had a mind of their own. The union of man and machine brought forth the entity known as "Doctor Octopus," a man determined to make his dream come to true no matter the cost. The arms brought out the darkest parts of Otto Octavius, turning his self-confidence into raging arrogance and his mild contempt for those of lesser intelligence than he into a brazen willingness to use people like tools to get what he needed.
Doc Ock spent the next three weeks gathering materials to rebuild his fusion reactor, utterly convinced that he could not have miscalculated. Spider-Man, however, had other plans, and did his best to stop Ock's plans. However, it was another freak accident that allowed Octavius to see through the veil of deceit his 'smart arms' had pulled over him. Determined not to die a monster, he bravely destroyed the remains of the fusion reactor, nearly killing himself in the process.
In fact, Ock would have died if not for his arms. Acting on their own, they pulled their master from the depths of the Hudson River to shore. And while Octavius was grateful to be alive, he didn't know quite where to go from here. His wife was still dead, and now his dream was truly dead as well.
Relatives: Torbert Theodore Octavius (father, deceased), Mary Lavinia Octavius (mother, deceased), Elias Hargrove (cousin)
Powers and Abilities: Tentacles: Octavius's abilities derive from his four tentacles. Attached to a harness fused to his lower chest and waist, each telepathically-controlled, telescoping tentacle is capable of moving at speeds of 90 feet per second and can strike with the force of a jackhammer. At full extension, the mechanical appendages allow him to travel high above the ground as if on stilts, either using two tentacles, or all four for maximum speed (estimated at 50 mph). The tentacles measure four and a half feet at rest and thirteen feet when fully extended. Each of the four tentacles was designed for a different function, and as such all four are unique. The lower two tentacles absorb the energy used by the upper tentacles for, say, throwing a taxi cab around.
Important Relationships: Rosalie "Rosie" Octavius (wife, deceased), Doctor Curt Connors (friend)
Personality: Octavius has been desscribed by many magazines as "energetic," "vibrant," "healthy," and "possessed of a touch of charming madness." Since becoming Doctor Octopus, he's a bit less "healthy" and "vibrant," but still very much energetic and possessed of a charming madness. Focused one hundred percent on his work - the only thing more important to him is the memory of his wife, who died because of his miscalculation.
