Brief History:
A homeless boy wandering the streets, Gambit was adopted by Jean-Luc LeBeau, head of the council of the Thieves Guild, a criminal organization based in New Orleans. As part of a peace pact between the Thieves Guild and their rivals, the Assassins Guild, a marriage was arranged between Gambit and Bella Donna Boudreaux, the granddaughter of the head of the Assassins. However, Bella Donna's brother Julien objected to the marriage and challenged Gambit to a duel. Severely wounding Julien, Gambit was forced to flee New Orleans to prevent war between the two guilds.
Gambit wandered the world as he plied his skills as a master thief, aided by his mutant power to charge objects with explosive energy. He employed playing cards he charged with kinetic energy as his trademark weapon. At one point Gambit agreed to assemble the team of assassins called the Marauders for Mister Sinister. Gambit did not realize that Sinister would employ the Marauders to massacre the underground mutant community called the Morlocks. When he eventually found out, he was horrified that he had been the unwitting catalyst for Sinister's slaughter and tried to stop it. It was too late for him to save a majority of the Morlocks, but he did manage to save one, a girl who would one day become known as "Marrow".
Eventually, Gambit encountered the X-Man Storm, who had been transformed into an amnesiac child and who had turned to theft. He helped her escape her enemy, the Shadow King, and they became partners in thievery. Later, when Professor Charles Xavier returned from a long period of traveling in outer space, Storm, having regained her memory and true age, sponsored Gambit's admission into the X-Men. Gambit remained on the team for longer than he had since his time with the Thieves' Guild. During his time on the X-Men, he had a romantic affair with one his fellow X-Men, the power-absorbing mutant Rogue. Eventually, however, Gambit and Rogue grew apart and part of that could be attested to the fact that Gambit could not sustain physical contact with Rogue lest her abilities harm him -- or in a worst case scenario, kill him. As for Bella Donna, she has become Gambit's enemy. Recently, the X-Men learned of Gambit's role in the massacre of the Morlocks. Guilt-ridden and ashamed, Gambit left the team, at least temporarily.
Thus far, he has only been seen in glimpses all over the world, usually in the process of doing "odd jobs" for various employers. His fellow X-Men have been keeping an eye on their wayward teammate, and a few have even gone so far as to contact him and ask him to return to them. As of yet, Gambit has no intention of returning to the X-Men, as he feels he needs solo time to come to terms with the demons of his past.
Relatives: Jean-Luc LeBeau (adoptive father), Bella Donna Boudreaux (wife, separated), Henri LeBeau (adoptive brother/deceased)
Powers and Abilities: Kinetic Charge: Gambit has the mutant ability to tap into the potential energy contained within an object and transform it into kinetic energy. When Gambit thus charges an object with kinetic energy and throws it at a target, the object releases this energy explosively upon impact.
Important Relationships: X-Men (Allies), Thieves' Guild (Former associates), Mr. Sinister (Former employer...?)
Personality:
Empathetic Charm: One of Gambit's more subtler powers that he really has no control over, he can manipulate people on a low empathetic level. Though he's never used this maliciously, it usually works to net him allies and friends with little effort on his part.
Deadly Accuracy: In the process of utilizing his Kinetic Charge ability, Gambit gained the ability to throw a wide array of objects with near-perfect accuracy. These objects include throwing knives, playing cards, etc.
Linguistics: Gambit is multilingual in English, Spanish, Russian and, of course, his native French.
A perpetual rogue, Gambit has a slick charm about him that works well with both genders, but more so with the ladies. Despite this, Gambit is usually seen alone and as such works alone on most endeavors, save for his forays with the X-Men. He is genial to most everyone, but has a sense of honor not normally seen in most thieves and won't steal from friends or allies.
