Brief History:
Yuriko Oyama's story begins with her father Kanji Oyama, alias Lord Darkwind, a former Japanese kamikaze pilot during World War II who had survived his suicidal assault on an American battleship. Kanji Oyama felt shamed by his survival. His face was scarred by the crash of his plane, and he likewise scarred the faces of his two sons and his daughter Yuriko. Lord Darkwind developed a means for bonding the virtually indestructible steel alloy adamantium to human bone, with which he hoped to create an army of superhuman soldiers for Japan. However, his notes were stolen, and it took him years to rediscover the process.
Yuriko resented her father Lord Darkwind greatly. It was bad enough that he had scarred her face permanently and her two brothers were killed in his name, but the straw that broke the camel's back was when Lord Darkwind pulled Yuriko's betrothed Kira into his service. Overcome by hatred and resentment, Yuriko allied herself with the crimefighter Daredevil, helping him infiltrate her father's private island. When Daredevil was near death at Lord Darkwind's hands, Yuriko took the opportunity to slay her father and avenge her brothers.
Although Yuriko envisioned a life with Kira with her father's death, it was not to be. Overcome with despair, Kira committed seppuku. The shock of Kira's death radically altered Yuriko's outlook on life. She came to adopt her late father's views, and became obsessed with the U.S. soldier known as Logan, who is better known as Wolverine.
Convinced that Wolverine had gained his own adamantium-laced skeleton through the process stolen from her father, Yuriko swore revenge. Hence, garbed as a female samurai and calling herself Lady Deathstrike, Yuriko led a number of her father's warriors to Canada where they confronted and tried to kill Wolverine. Lady Deathstrike herself wielded a sword that gave off destructive energy. However, Lady Deathstrike was defeated by Wolverine's friend Heather Hudson.
So obsessed was she with revenge upon Wolverine that Lady Deathstrike sought out any whom she thought could help her defeat him. Eventually, someone answered - the mysterious "Pontifex" came forward and offered her a chance to evolve as Wolverine had, albeit in a different way. She accepted, and Pontifex transformed her into a cyborg with an almost pure adamantium skeleton replete with long adamantium finger-claws. But with her newfound power, Deathstrike realized that she owed Pontifex a debt and thus went into his service as his personal assassin and bodyguard until further notice.
